How to Wear a Corduroy Shirt

Wear a corduroy shirt one of two ways: tucked and buttoned as a shirt under a knit or a jacket, or worn open over a plain tee or an oxford as a light overshirt. Keep everything around it smooth — wool trousers, a fine-gauge knit, leather shoes — so the texture is the only texture in the outfit. Pair it with muted, natural colors: olive, tobacco, stone, navy, oxblood. Avoid wearing it with denim on the bottom half, and avoid pairing it with a second heavy texture.

Corduroy is one of the few casual cloths that reads adult rather than collegiate, which is why it belongs in a wardrobe built on restraint. Below: what corduroy actually is, why it suits fall, and how the two ways of wearing it differ. BEARING's Bordeaux Shirt ($44.99) is a cotton-blend corduroy and is the reference point throughout; you can see it alongside the rest of the BEARING catalog.

What is corduroy?

Corduroy is a cotton cloth woven with extra filling yarns that are cut after weaving to produce raised parallel ridges — the wales. The wale is what you are looking at and what you are feeling. Everything about how a corduroy garment reads follows from how wide those ridges are and how much the cloth weighs.

Wale count is measured as the number of ridges per inch. Lower numbers mean wider, deeper ridges.

Wale count Name Character Best used for
1.5-4 Wide / elephant wale Deep ridges, heavy, strongly textured Trousers and jackets. Too bulky for a shirt
6-10 Standard wale The classic corduroy look. Substantial but drapes Trousers, overshirts, shirt jackets
11-16 Fine wale / needlecord Soft, close ridges, almost a velvet at distance Shirts. The wale to want for anything worn tucked
17+ Pinwale Texture reads as tone rather than ridge Dress-leaning shirts, layering pieces

Weight follows wale. A fine-wale shirt behaves like a slightly heavier flannel — it holds a collar, tucks without bunching, and takes a knit over the top. A wide-wale shirt behaves like a light jacket and should be treated as one.

Why does corduroy read as a fall cloth?

Because the ridges catch light and cast small shadows, corduroy absorbs more light than a flat weave and returns a deeper, warmer version of whatever color it is dyed. A tobacco poplin looks tan; the same dye in corduroy looks like leather. The eye reads that depth as warmth, and warmth as cold weather.

The second reason is practical. The pile traps air, so a corduroy shirt is measurably warmer than a poplin of the same weight. It sits in the same seasonal slot as flannel and moleskin — a cloth for the months when a shirt has to do more than cover you.

How to wear a corduroy shirt as a shirt

Tucked, buttoned to the second button, with the collar left to sit naturally. Treat it as you would a flannel or an oxford: it is the middle layer, not the statement. Fine wale only — a wide wale will not tuck cleanly.

  • Trousers. Wool or wool-blend, flat and smooth. The Kensington Trouser ($74.99) in herringbone wool-blend or the Torino Trouser ($66.99) both give the shirt a quiet base. Check the Materials & Care panel on each product page for exact compositions.
  • Over the top. A fine-gauge knit or an unstructured blazer. A cable-knit sweater over corduroy stacks two textures and reads busy — save the Whitfield Sweater ($68.99) or Hawthorne Sweater ($79.99) for a smooth shirt.
  • Shoes. A clean loafer or a plain derby, in a dark tone, with some polish to it. The Chatham Loafer ($79.99) and the Marquis Loafer ($54.99) both hold the outfit at the right level of formality; the Materials & Care panel lists what each is made from.
  • Color. One warm cloth against neutrals. A Bordeaux corduroy over charcoal or stone trousers is the whole idea.

How to wear a corduroy shirt as an overshirt

Unbuttoned or fastened to the chest, worn over a plain crew tee or a poplin shirt, untucked, hem sitting at the top of the trouser pocket. This is the standard-wale application, and the one that carries a Saturday.

Two rules make the difference. First, the layer underneath has to be plain — the Sterling Shirt ($46.99) or a clean tee, nothing patterned. Second, the shirt must be cut close enough that it still looks intentional; an overshirt is a garment, not a size up.

Worn as a shirt Worn as an overshirt
Wale Fine wale or pinwale Standard to wide wale
Hem Tucked Untucked, ending at the trouser pocket
Underneath Nothing, or a plain undershirt Plain tee or a smooth poplin shirt
Over the top Fine knit, unstructured blazer, or a coat A coat only
Trousers Wool, flannel, smooth cotton Smooth cotton, wool, chino
Reads as Smart casual, office-adjacent Casual, weekend, deliberately relaxed

What colors work with corduroy?

Corduroy carries deep, earthy color better than any other cotton cloth, and it flattens bright color badly. Work within a narrow, natural range and let the texture do the work.

  • Bordeaux, tobacco, rust. The strongest corduroy colors. Anchor with charcoal, stone or navy below.
  • Olive and forest. Quiet, and easy against gray and tan trousers.
  • Stone, oatmeal, ecru. The lightest sensible option. Works as a near-neutral over darker layers.
  • Navy and charcoal. The most formal corduroy reading. Almost passes for a flannel shirt at distance.

The palette here is the same one that governs old money style for men: nothing announces itself, and everything agrees with everything else.

What to avoid with a corduroy shirt

  • Corduroy with denim. Two heavy, high-texture cottons in one outfit. One or the other.
  • Corduroy on corduroy. A corduroy shirt with corduroy trousers reads as a uniform, and not a flattering one.
  • Wide wale tucked in. The ridges bunch at the waistband and add bulk exactly where nothing should be added.
  • Cable knit over the top. Two textures competing. Use a fine-gauge knit instead.
  • Sneakers with a fine-wale shirt. The shirt is doing tailored work; the shoe should agree with it.
  • Ironing it flat. Pressing crushes the pile and leaves shine. Steam it instead, or hang it in a warm bathroom.

Is a corduroy shirt smart casual?

A fine-wale corduroy shirt, tucked, with wool trousers and leather shoes, is squarely smart casual. A wide-wale one worn open over a tee is not — it is casual, and no amount of trouser will move it. The wale decides the register, not the styling.

That distinction matters most at work. Our guide to men's smart casual outfits covers the wider rules, and dressing to be read as senior at work covers where the line sits in an office.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a corduroy shirt to the office?

In a business-casual office, yes — fine wale, tucked, in a dark or muted color, with wool trousers. In a formal office, treat it as a Friday shirt rather than a Monday one.

Can you wear a tie with a corduroy shirt?

Only with a fine wale and a soft, textured tie such as wool or knitted silk. A smooth silk tie against a ridged cloth looks borrowed from another outfit.

What trousers go with a corduroy shirt?

Smooth ones. Wool, flannel or a clean cotton in charcoal, stone, navy or tan. The rule is one texture per outfit, and the shirt has already used it.

How should a corduroy shirt fit?

Close through the shoulder and chest, with the hem long enough to tuck. If you intend to wear it open as an overshirt, allow room for one plain layer underneath — but no more, or it stops looking deliberate.

Is corduroy warm enough for winter?

As a shirt, it is a mid-layer, not outerwear. The pile adds warmth over a poplin, but a cold day still wants a coat over it — see our comparison of overcoat vs topcoat vs peacoat to pick the right one.

How do you stop corduroy going shiny?

Wash it inside out on a cool cycle, keep the iron off it, and brush the pile back in one direction while it is still slightly damp. Shine is crushed pile, and crushed pile is usually heat.
